Air freight in Bahrain: import and export air cargo
When a shipment can’t wait for a vessel (spare parts, samples, urgent stock, high-value goods), air freight through Bahrain International Airport is the fastest route in or out of the country. We book space, prepare the air waybill and clear the cargo, so it reaches your door with as little waiting as possible.

What we handle
Air cargo in and out of Bahrain runs through one airport, so every shipment meets the same terminal, the same customs officers and the same short drive to the delivery address. That makes the steps predictable. What varies is the cargo itself.
- Import and export air cargo
- Consolidated (shared) and direct shipments
- Airport-to-door delivery anywhere in Bahrain
- Customs clearance at Bahrain International Airport
How air freight is charged
Airlines charge on whichever is greater: the actual weight or the volumetric weight of the shipment. Volumetric weight is calculated as:
length × width × height (cm) ÷ 6,000 = volumetric weight (kg)
So a light but bulky carton can cost more than its scale weight suggests. Send us the dimensions with your enquiry and we’ll work out the chargeable weight for you.
A worked example
Take one carton of 60 × 50 × 40 cm that weighs 12 kg on the scale. Its volume is 120,000 cm³, and 120,000 ÷ 6,000 gives a volumetric weight of 20 kg. The airline charges for 20 kg, not 12. Packed into a smaller carton of 50 × 40 × 30 cm, the same goods would come to 10 kg volumetric, and the charge would fall back to the actual 12 kg. The figures are illustrative; the point is that the box often matters as much as what is in it. Pallets follow the same rule, measured to the top of the highest carton.
When air makes sense from Bahrain
Air is the right call when the cost of waiting is higher than the cost of flying. A machine stopped for want of one spare part, samples a buyer needs to see this week, stock for a launch date: in each case the freight bill is small next to the delay it avoids.
It is rarely the right call for heavy, low-value goods, or for cargo going a short distance by land. From Bahrain, much of the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia is close enough by road that a truck over the King Fahd Causeway can compete with a flight once airport handling on both ends is counted. For longer sea routes into Bahrain, the gap is weeks, not hours, and air earns its price. The useful question is not “which is fastest?” but “what does each day of waiting cost?” Compare road freight to Saudi Arabia and the GCC or FCL and LCL sea freight if time allows.
Getting air cargo ready
Most of what slows an air shipment happens before it reaches the airport. Measured dimensions and weights on the packing list should match the cartons; airlines re-weigh and re-measure, and a difference changes the bill. Each package should be labelled with the consignee and the number of pieces, so the shipment can be counted at every handover.
The air waybill carries the shipper, consignee, piece count, weight and a description of the goods. We prepare it from your commercial invoice and packing list, so those two documents need to agree with each other. Goods that need a certificate or permit in Bahrain should have it arranged before the flight, so the cargo can be cleared at Bahrain International Airport on arrival and delivered from there.
Some everyday goods are restricted on aircraft: lithium batteries, perfumes, aerosols and many chemicals among them. They have to be declared before a booking is made, so tell us what is actually in the box, not only its trade name, when you ask for a quote.
Consolidated or direct?
The two ways a shipment can fly, and what each one trades.
- Consolidated (shared).
- Your cargo travels with other shippers’ goods under one master air waybill, and each shipment keeps its own house air waybill. The rate per kilogram is usually lower, and the trade-off is that the consolidation flies on a set schedule.
- Direct.
- The shipment has its own air waybill and goes on the next suitable flight. It costs more per kilogram, and it is the choice when the date matters more than the rate.
After landing, cargo moves to the airport’s cargo terminal in Muharraq, where it is checked against the air waybill, declared to customs and released. From there it is a short drive to most addresses in Bahrain, which is why the time between touchdown and delivery depends far more on the paperwork than on the road.
Air freight questions
Is air freight always faster door to door?
Usually, but not always within the GCC. For Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, a truck across the causeway can sometimes deliver sooner than a flight once airport handling is included. We’ll tell you when that’s the case.
What documents are needed?
Commercial invoice, packing list and the air waybill (which we prepare), plus any certificate or permit Bahrain requires for the product, arranged before the flight so the cargo clears at Bahrain International Airport on arrival.
